About the Agency

The Bukowski Agency specializes in international literary fiction and up-market non-fiction for adults. It does not represent children's literature, plays, poetry, or screenplays. The agency looks for writers whose work can be marketed in many media and territories, and who have the potential to make a living from their work. The Bukowski Agency Ltd. represents approximately 70 clients, and concentrates on developing business outside the country.

Denise Bukowski

OWNER AND FOUNDER

Denise Bukowski has worked in book publishing in Canada since 1970, for the first 16 years as an editor and since 1986 as a literary agent. As a staff editor Denise worked for Holt, Rinehart and Winston, McClelland and Stewart (1973-79), McGraw Hill, the Art Gallery of Ontario (Head of Publications), and Douglas & McIntyre (Editorial Director). As a freelance editor she worked for just about every other publisher in Canada, including Penguin, Key Porter, Doubleday, HarperCollins, and University of Toronto Press.

Born in Buffalo, Denise Bukowski grew up in Rochester, New York. She graduated from Boston University and spent her third year at Leeds University in England.

Alanna Zorgdrager

ASSISTANT TO THE LITERARY AGENT

Alanna Zorgdrager was born in Stratford, Ontario. She graduated with honours from Western University with a Bachelor’s degree in English and an honours specialization in Creative Writing. Alanna was the winner of the 2019 Avie Bennett Prize in Canadian Literature and has been published in the Occasus student magazine.

In 2023, Alanna completed her Certificate in Publishing from Toronto Metropolitan University. After working for seven years as a Senior Accounting Clerk at Scotiabank, she joined the Bukowski Agency as an Assistant to the Literary Agent.
